Costello’s Detour Continues
Elvis Costello is to follow his scheduled September concerts in Japan and Singapore by continuing his solo Detour dates in the Midwest and South of the US in October. His guests on the itinerary will once again be the sibling duo Larkin Poe, whom Elvis has championed and toured with extensively in recent times.
The dates include performances at Town Hall in New York on 1 October, Austin City Limits on the 13th and his latest appearance at the famed Ryman Auditorium on the 17th. Then on 22 October, Costello resumes touring with his band the Imposters, who have a run of engagements culminating at the Beacon Theatre in New York on 6 November.
The gigs with the Imposters, who feature bassist Davey Faragher and original Attractions members, drummer Pete Thomas and keyboard player Steve Nieve, are billed as Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers. They will be based on selections from the titular 1982 album, plus “the songs that led in and out of that velvet-trimmed playhouse,” as Elvis puts it. The Beacon Theatre date will be the group’s first full show in New York since 2011.
“You must have known by now that we wouldn’t play this kind of show by anyone else’s rules,” he goes on. “You’ll hear all the songs that fit the bill; hits and headlines, waifs and strays. In the words of the great [British comedian] Eric Morecambe, ‘I am playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order.’”
