Nasty C, Ari Lennox And More Perform For ‘Coming 2 America’ Tiny Desk Concert
NPR Music’s Tiny Desk celebrates culture and community in ‘Rhythms of Zamunda: Music Inspired By Coming 2 America’ Home Concert.
Six artists from four countries in Africa, including Nasty C, Locko, and Kaybee, have joined forces to perform tracks from Rhythms of Zamunda: Music Inspired By Coming 2 America for a very special Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.
Featuring on the companion album to Eddie Murphy’s highly anticipated Coming To America 2021 sequel, Rhythms of Zamunda showcases the burgeoning talent coming out of the continent today.
With performances from the likes of rising South African rapper Nasty C, The Tiny Desk concert aims to help bridge the distance between countries and cultures. Other stand-out performances include R&B star Ari Lennox, Locko, Ricky Tyler, Alpha P, Prince Kaybee, Msaki, and Toofan.
“Over the years, African musicians have elevated expectations at the Tiny Desk, writes NPR. “The distinctive vibrations left by artists like Burna Boy, KOKOKO! and the Soweto Gospel Choir have lead to some of the most unforgettable moments in our rich history. This (home) concert feels like the culmination of all of those moments.”
Rhythms of Zamunda: Music Inspired By Coming 2 America is a result of the CEO of Universal Music South Africa and Sub-Saharan South Africa Sipho Dlamini’s personal love for the original film.
“I know how significant a movie it was to people living in Africa or Africans in the diaspora,” Dlamini told Variety. “I can still recite some of the jokes from the first movie, like the barbershop scene or the jokes about ‘sexual chocolate.’ It’s one of my favorite comedies of all time.”
“We wanted to bring our knowledge of the music from the continent that is coming up and affecting the youth globally — it’s not just Afrobeat.”
Rhythms of Zamunda: Music Inspired By Coming 2 America is a collaboration between Def Jam US and Def Jam Africa, who helped curate the companion album to showcase a whole range of African sounds and artists.
Meanwhile, Nasty C is one of the most promising talents on the Def Jam Africa roster, stealing the show on collaborations with Ari Lennox and T.I. This past summer, Nasty C dropped his highly anticipated album, Zulu Man With Some Power to critical acclaim.
