The Cranberries and CHVRCHES’ Iain Cook ‘Linger’ Remix Is Coming to Vinyl
The first collaborative reimagining of the beloved 1993 single will be coming to 7-inch vinyl alongside the original track.
Earlier this year, The Cranberries collaborated with CHVRCHES’ Iain Cook for a remix of their 1993 single “Linger.” Now, that track will be coming out on a 7-inch single: the remix will appear on the A-side and the original track will be on the B-side.
The “Linger [Iain Cook Remix]” marks the first collaborative reimagining of the track and is the first collaboration of any kind from The Cranberries in six years. The Cranberries’ Fergal Lawler plays drums on the song.
“Linger” appeared on the Cranberries 1993 debut Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? That album, released via Island, topped the UK charts and was a commercial success. An aptly-titled anthem of heartbreak and longing, “Linger” was a runaway hit, reaching No. 3 in the band’s native Ireland, No. 8 in the U.S. and No. 14 in the UK. “‘Linger’ was the first song we wrote,” vocalist Dolores O’Riordan later recalled in an interview with The Irish Times. “Initially, it was just a chord shape, with no real melody or lyrics. I took a tape of it home and came up with a verse and chorus. I wrote about being rejected. I never imagined that it would become a big song.”
When O’Riordan died suddenly in 2018, the Cranberries had been working on their eighth album, In the End. The 2019 record went on to be nominated for Best Rock Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards. In 2021, The Cranberries released Remembering Dolores, a compilation album. Earlier this year, the band shared the Wrapped Around Your Finger EP, which included “Linger.”
Last year, CHVRCHES celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut The Bones of What You Believe with a reissue featuring previously unheard songs and live recordings. The band’s singer Lauren Mayberry will release her solo debut, Vicious Creature, in December.
