Buffett For Broadway In 2018
Cherished American troubadour Jimmy Buffett will see his Escape To Margaritaville musical on Broadway, but not before it’s been on tour in a number of US cities.
The show had already been confirmed to open in May at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, and its producers have now announced that it will subsequently travel to New Orleans, Houston and Chicago. It’s scheduled to open on Broadway in New York in spring 2018.
“We’ll set sail from California on a pre-Broadway national tour stopping first in the city that gave me my start — New Orleans,” says Buffett. “Then to some of my other favourites,” he added, “before arriving at that port of all ports, Broadway and New York City.”
Escape To Margaritaville will be directed by Christopher Ashley, who was Tony-nominated for his direction of The Rocky Horror Show and Memphis. Based on the character of a part-time bartender and singer named Tully, the script is being written by Greg Garcia, the creator of the hit TV comedy series My Name Is Earl, and the comic actor Mike O’Malley, who played Deputy Stuart Daniels in that show.
The musical takes its name and its inspiration from one of Buffett’s signature songs, ‘Margaritaville,’ which reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.
