The 2019 Billboard Music Awards returned to the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Wednesday, 1 May, with Drake breaking the record for the most awards ever.

Beating out Cardi B for Top Artist and surpassing Taylor Swift as the most recognized winner in Billboard Music Award history, Drake took home 12 awards that evening, with a career total of 27.

The multi-platinum rapper thanked his mother for taking him to all of his extracurricular activities and her “relentless effort in my life”.

The competition was even tougher this year, with Cardi B leading the packing with 21 nominations, followed by Drake and Post Malone with 17 each and Ariana Grande with 9.

Taylor Swift and Panic At The Disco!’s Brandon Urie made their colourful entrance to open the show, premiering their new track ‘ME!’ on live TV. The duo reprised their candy-coloured video, dancing around with briefcases and descending from the sky on umbrellas.

Kelly Clarkson returned as charming host, singling a medley of nominated songs including an amazing rendition of Maroon 5 and Cardi B’s ‘Girls Like Me’.

Giving us a taste of what her Grammys’ performance could have been, Ariana Grande performed her smash hit ‘7 Rings’, putting her live rapping skills to the test and assembling a gang of dancers for an intricately-choreographed number that topped the evening. Grande also took home two awards during the show for Chart Achievement and Top Female Artist.

The night was also all about the boy bands, with the Jonas Brothers making their highly anticipated reunion to perform their new single ‘Sucker’, off their forthcoming album Happiness Begins. The brothers also performed a medley of their hits including Nick’s solo hit ‘Jealous’, while Joe led the DNCE Top 10 single ‘Cake By The Ocean’.

The real stars of the night were another boy band sensation, K-pop group BTS, who recreated the pastel perfection of their record-breaking video, ‘Boys With Luv’, performing the song live with Halsey for the first time on stage. The immensely popular group has won Best Social Artist in the past but tonight they made history, winning Top Duo/Group.

But this year’s awards weren’t all about the newcomers. The queen of pop Madonna debuted her new single ‘Medellín’ featuring reggaetón star Maluma. The two cha-chaed on stage while surrounded by Madonna holographic doppelgangers.

Another diva was also in attendance, with Mariah Carey accepting the prestigious icon award. The R&B legend also performed a medley of her most enduring hits including ‘Always Be My Baby’, ‘Emotions’, ‘We Belong Together’ and ‘Hero’, before giving a heartfelt speech.

Closing out the show, fellow pop veteran Paula Abdul continued the nostalgia parade, performing her chart-topping hits ‘Straight Up’, ‘Cold Hearted’ and even brought out the dancing cartoon cat from her music video for ‘Opposites Attract’.
