Bastille Gives Fans ‘Goosebumps’ With New EP
The five-song collection includes ‘survivin’ and ‘What You Gonna Do???’ feat. Graham Coxon.
British indie-pop outfit Bastille surprised fans with the release of their new EP, Goosebumps. The five-song collection, which follows their best-selling 2019 LP, Doom Days, includes recent singles “survivin’,” “What You Gonna Do???” featuring Graham Coxon, and the title track, which is a collaboration with Kenny Beats. You can hear the latter below.
Earlier this week, frontman Dan Smith joined Kenny Beats on his Twitch show to tease their new single. Fans can expect an accompanying visual – helmed by frequent collaborator Reza Dolatabadi – to drop on Monday.
“We wanted to make a throwback R&B song and something a bit more playful,” explained Smith in a statement. “We had a lot of fun writing and recording it, initially on a day in between shows whilst touring in New York last year, and then back in London at our studio – One Eyed Jack’s.”
He continued, “We’re big fans of Kenny Beats, and having met him in LA invited him to hang out at the studio when he was in town. We played each other a load of music, and he loved ‘Goosebumps’ and immediately started working on beats and sounds for it, and it kind of went from there.”
Over the summer, the band shared “What You Gonna Do???,” much to the surprise, and delight, of fans. The anthemic song features vocals and guitar from Blur’s Graham Coxon. Its follow-up, “survivin,’” offered a completely different sonic backdrop – one which incorporated sparse instrumentation over infectious drum loops and finger snaps. The track found Smith opening up to his audience with candid lyrics about anxiety and self-doubt.
“Working on these songs has been such a brilliantly distracting part of this year for us,” said Smith in a statement. “This is the tip of the iceberg of what we’ve been doing, but it’s been fun to show people a few different sides to what we’ve been up to. Getting to collaborate with people like Graham Coxon and Kenny Beats hopefully shows the diversity of what we do across our albums and mixtapes.”
He added, “This EP has been a lot of fun to make, and we’ve loved seeing the reactions so far. We’re happy to have this little body of work out, and we’re incredibly excited for all that’s to come next year.”
