Ariana Grande Sets New UK Record For Most Streams In A Week
The singer’s new track ‘7 Rings’ was streamed 16. 9million times, beating the previous record holder, Mariah Carey.
Ariana Grande has broken the UK record for the most streams of a song in a week, attributed to her new single ‘7 Rings’.
The news comes with the track also reaching No. 1 in the charts, with 126,000 copies sold. ‘7 Rings’ was streamed a UK record-breaking 16.9m times last week, surpassing Mariah Carey’s 15.3m plays in a week in December 2018 for ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’.
As uDiscover Music previously reported, ‘7 Rings’ already smashed the all-time Spotify 24 hour record for most streams. The Republic Records star’s latest hit racked up the biggest tally of plays on the platform ever seen within a 24 hour period. The track officially accrued 14,966,544 global plays on Spotify on day one, after being released on Friday, 18 January.
Statistically, that figure was over 4 million plays bigger than the previous 24-hour record breaker – once again ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ by Mariah Carey – which attracted 10,819,009 Spotify streams on 24 December during the 2018 holiday season.
As the BBC recently reported, the song is also the first single to sell more than 100,000 copies in the UK since the Grenfell Tower charity single, which was released in June 2017.
The video for the song, which premiered on 17 January, was watched 23.6 million times on YouTube in its first 24 hours. At the time of writing, it’s been played more than 80 million times on the platform.
Earlier in the week, Grande confirmed that her new album, Thank U, Next, would drop on 8 February. The singer shared the tracklist on Instagram, revealing that the 12-track record will also feature the songs ‘Imagine’ and the record-breaking ‘7 Rings’. The Instagram post, also confirmed that the record’s final track is called ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’.
