The 2020 BRIT Awards took place tonight on 18 February at London’s O2 Arena, with Lewis Capaldi, Mabel and Billie Eilish among the big winners of the evening.
Along with picking up the award for International Female Solo Artist, Eilish performed her new Bond theme ‘No Time To Die’ for the first time, alongside her brother Finneas and special guests Hans Zimmer and Johnny Marr.
After her haunting performance, Eilish gave an emotional acceptance speech after beating out Lizzo, Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande and Camilla Cabello, and calling them “the only reason I exist”.
“I’ve felt very hated recently. And when I was on the stage and I saw you guys all smiling at me…it genuinely made me wanna cry. And I wanna cry right now, so thank you.”
This was the first BRIT award for the 18-year-old singer-songwriter. Eilish wasn’t the only performer who turned heads Tuesday night. Mabel kicked off the evening’s proceedings with a stellar rendition of her hit song ‘Don’t Call Me Up’ and later won Best Female Solo Artist, 30 years to the day her mother Neneh Cherry won at the BRIT Awards.
The other big winner of the evening was Scottish balladeer Lewis Capaldi, who won Best New Artist and Song Of The Year for his No.1 hit, ‘Someone You Loved’.
The self-effacing singer-songwriter also used the opportunity to share the real story behind the hit song.
“Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend who you can see every night on Love Island,” he added, referencing the ITV2 show’s contestant Paige Turley.
“It’s actually about my grandmother, who sadly passed away a few years ago. And I hope to god that ITV don’t contact her to be on a reality TV dating show,” he quipped.
This year’s annual event marked the 40th anniversary of the BRIT Awards, that was once again hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall.
Other big winners of the evening included Stormzy for Male Solo Artist, Foals for Best Group, Dave’s Psychodrama for Album of The Year, Tyler The Creator for International Male Solo Artist and R&B singer Celeste for Rising Star.
