Stax 60 Campaign Arrives At ‘Soulsville USA’

Published on

Concord Music Group and Rhino Entertainment have announced the 22 September release of Soulsville U.S.A.: A Celebration of Stax. The compilation is part of the two companies’ joint, year-long campaign to celebrate the famous soul company’s 60th anniversary. It follows the BBC’s Stax tribute concert as part of their 2017 Proms season, which aired last Friday (1 September) on BBC Four and BBC Radio 3.

PrintThe 60-track, three-CD anthology covers the label’s most illustrious period from the early 1960s to the mid-1970s and the artists who helped to create the “Memphis Sound.” They include Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Booker T & the MGs, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, the Dramatics and Johnnie Taylor.

Soulsville U.S.A.: A Celebration of Stax will serve as an update to Stax 50: A 50th Anniversary Celebration, which was released in 2007 and has scanned almost 100,000 units in the interim decade. Each of the three discs also includes lesser-known gems from Stax history by sucn artists as the Astors, Wendy Rene, the Mad Lads, Linda Lyndell, the Temprees and the Soul Children.

Soulsville USAStax publicist (and one-time recording artist) Deanie Parker, whose association with the company goes back to 1963, says: “Stax Records has been connecting the world with rhythm & blues-soul music for 60 years. Five of our remaining irreplaceable Stax legends delivered an electrifying standing room only performance recently at the BBC Proms with help from legendary Tom Jones, Jools Holland and his exciting R&B Orchestra.

“The potent live music concert was top quality and ‘royal,” continues Parker. “Stax hit songs performed by William Bell, Booker T. Jones, Sam Moore, Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper set our hearts on fire, had us dancing in our seats and brought back so many precious memories. Even now, I am still on a sweet soul music high.”
