Today Grammy award-winning violinist Nicola Benedetti released her first single, Salut d’Amour, from her new Elgar album which will be released digitally worldwide on 15 May 2020. Nicola Benedetti was so intensely moved by Salut d’Amour when she first heard it, aged six, that she burst into tears.
Edward Elgar composed Salut d’Amour, one of his best-known works, in 1888 when he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts and he gave the piece to her as an engagement present. The dedication was in French: “à Carice” – “Carice” was a combination of his wife’s names, Caroline Alice, and was the name given to their daughter born two years later.
Learn Salut d’Amour with Nicky
This week Nicola Benedetti launched ‘Learn Salut d’Amour with Nicky’ and invited young musicians to learn and perform one of the violin’s most popular pieces. Nicola Benedetti gave daily tutorials on Salut d’Amour, via Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, for a week from 10 – 16 April and participants were invited to email their performances or upload on social media. A winner will be selected from the entries and their performance will be premiered online on 19 April at 5pm BST followed by a live Q&A ‘Ask Nicky’.
Nicola Benedetti explained, “During these unprecedented times, the re-creation of community and collectivity is urgently needed and there is no better way than through the arts and music. As part of our ‘With Nicky’ series I am so excited to teach this beautiful piece via social media channels and hope that many, many young violinists will join me to explore it further together and then give a mass virtual performance. I can’t wait!”
Nicola Benedetti’s new Elgar album, released digitally worldwide on 15 May 2020, features his vast Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61 coupled with three short works for violin and piano: Salut d’Amour, Sospiri and Chanson de Nuit. Nicola Benedetti performs Elgar’s Violin Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. Pianist Petr Liminov joins Benedetti for Salut d’Amour, Sospiri and Chanson de Nuit.
“The depth of love and fascination I have for this man and his music has made this entire process a dream”
Nicola Benedetti noted,“The depth of love and fascination I have for this man and his music has made this entire process a dream. He was so out of the ordinary, from his non-traditional training to his understanding of people to his style of expression in music – there is only one Edward Elgar, and I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to record so much of his music.”
