Superstar pianist Lang Lang performed with his wife, Gina Alice, at the ‘Singles Day’ show in Shanghai. The show celebrates China’s largest online shopping day of the year, on 11 November, and was created by Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba.
Lang Lang and Gina Alice began their performance at the ‘Singles Day’ show with a duet arrangement of the Chinese traditional ‘Jasmine Flower’ before accompanying Chinese singer, songwriter Chris Lee, who rose to fame after winning Super Girl, China’s version of The X Factor, in 2005. Other artists on the show, which was viewed by over 300 million people, included Taylor Swift.
Singles Day
‘Singles Day’ is the world’s biggest shopping day of the year – the annual 24 hour event generates more revenue than the online sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. The event first became popular in China as a day for single people to celebrate being single and buy gifts for themselves but is now popular with people of all relationship statuses and across all age groups.
More than $1bn was spent in just over one minute of trading during yesterday’s ‘Singles Day’. At the end of the event gross merchandise value, a figure that shows sales across Alibaba’s shopping platforms, was 268.4 billion yuan (around $38.3 billion) – almost a 26% rise from last year’s figure of 213.5 billion yuan (nearly $30.5 billion). Alibaba’s new record was achieved despite a slowing Chinese economy, rising competition from domestic rivals, and concern that Chinese consumers may be reluctant to buy US brands because of tensions and a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
Yesterday’s ‘Singles Day’ show featured a host of top celebrities including Lang Lang, Gina Alice, Taylor Swift, and Chinese singer, songwriter Chris Lee.
