STAGE+ can be experienced on any compatible device—TV, computer, smartphone or tablet—at home or on the go in offline mode.

Three of Europe’s largest classical summer festivals, Bayreuth, Salzburg and Verbier, are currently highlighted on STAGE+.

Bayreuth Festival

Founded in 1876 by composer Richard Wagner, the Bayreuth Festival annually performs the German composer’s ten “mature” operas over the course of a month in the Festspielhaus designed by the composer himself. This year, STAGE+ livestreamed the opening night of Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson’s new production of Tristan und Isolde. Conducted by Semyon Bychkov, the opera’s cast features Andreas Schager and Camilla Nylund in the title roles.

STAGE+ hosts a comprehensive collection Bayreuth productions including over 30 full-length stagings like Barrie Kosky’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (2017), Tobias Kratzer’s Tannhäuser (2019), Dmitri Tcherniakov’s Der fliegende Holländer (2021).

Salzburg Festival

Established in 1920, Salzburg Festival is held for five weeks every summer in the birthplace of Mozart. STAGE+ will be streaming three live concerts from this year’s festival, all featuring the Wiener Philharmoniker. August 11 offers Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, conducted by Andris Nelsons. Then on August 23, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducts Krzysztof Warlikowski’s new production of Mieczysław Weinberg’s final opera, The Idiot, its libretto based on the classic novel by Dostoevsky. The following day presents Les Contes d’Hoffmann, directed by Mariame Clément, conducted by Offenbach specialist Marc Minkowski, and starring tenor Benjamin Bernheim in the title role.

The Salzburg archive on STAGE+ features audio and video recordings of solo recitals, orchestral concerts, operas, and more. Recent additions include a 2015 Tchaikovsky and Brahms programme from Anne-Sophie Mutter and Riccardo Muti, and Andris Nelsons’ interpretation of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony from the 2022 Festival.

Verbier Festival

Since its establishment 30 years ago, the Verbier Festival in the Swiss Alps has gained global renown while developing a new generation of classical musicians.

This year, STAGE+ will livestream a July 29 recital of French and Polish music for violin and piano given by Bomsori and Julien Quentin. Three other concerts from the 2024 festival are available to view including Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Verbier Festival Orchestra in this year’s opening concert, a performance of Mahler’s Third Symphony, with mezzo-soprano soloist Magdalena Kožená. Also streaming are solo piano recitals from the winner of the 2022 Van Cliburn Competition, Yunchan Lim (works by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky), and from recent Deutsche Grammophon signing Nobuyuki Tsujii (music by Bach, Liszt, Ravel and Kapustin).
