Stax Heading For Broadway?

Published on

There’s word from the US that Concord Music Group and the Academy Award-nominated, Grammy-winning producer Stuart Benjamin have started development of what is planned to be a Broadway musical stage production based on the story of Stax Records.

The production would bring to the stage the historic emergence of the ground-breaking, racially integrated label, starting with its origins in an old movie theatre on East McLemore Avenue in Memphis and depicting its rise to become one of the most important companies in the music industry from the 1960s.

Concord reports that the book for the production will be written by Matthew Benjamin, and that the target date for the musical’s Broadway premiere is spring 2016.
