Stax Go Down Southern Avenue
Stax Records, part of the Concord Music Group, has announced the signing of Memphis quartet Southern Avenue. The deal follows acclaim for the soul, gospel and pop-flavoured outfit, who have been described by the Memphis Flyer as “simply the best band in Memphis right now” and the “most talked about band” in the city by local rock station ROCK 103FM.
Southern Avenue, consisting of guitarist Ori Naftaly, vocalist Tierinii Jackson, drummer Tikyra Jackson and bassist Daniel McKee, are working on their debut full length album for release in the spring of 2017. They’re making it with producer Kevin Houston, known for his work with North Missisippi Allstars, Patty Griffin and Lucero.
“This young group embodies the spirit and sound of Memphis, both past and present,” says Concord Label Group President, John Burk, “and Stax is the perfect imprint to represent Southern Avenue’s unique blend of rhythm & blues, gospel and Southern soul.” The signing is all the more apt since Southern Avenue are named after the street in Memphis that runs from its eastern city limits all the way to Stax’s original home of Soulsville.
The band are currently touring in Europe, with upcoming gigs in Belgium and Holland, before they return home for extensive US dates, starting on 8 September in Memphis.
