Jonas Blue’s ‘Mama’ Enters The Spotify Billions Club
This marks Jonas Blue’s third song to reach the milestone.
In 2017, English DJ Jonas Blue released his single “Mama” featuring vocals from William Singe. Now, in 2024, the song has joined the Spotify Billions Club after hitting one billion streams on the platform. This marks Jonas Blue’s third song to reach this milestone, following 2015’s “Fast Car” and 2018’s “Perfect Strangers.”
When the song released, Blue shared: “’Mama’ is a song about that period of your life when you’re young and carefree, without stress, bills and problems and all you care about is having a good time with your friends every day and night!” The song’s chorus reassures “mama” that even though the singer is out living life, he’ll still come home in the morning: “Hey ma, we gonna be alright, dry those eyes / We’ll be back in the morning when the sun starts to rise.”
The song was co-written by Blue alongside Ed Drewett (Little Mix, Olly Murs, One Direction) and Sam Romans (Disclosure, Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys.)
The video for the track portrays that aspirational lifestyle, featuring Blue and Singe spending careless days on the Albanian coast in the company of Albanian model Oriola Marashi. There’s a brief run in with some gangsters, but after the duo trade a hard drive with their music for a briefcase of cash, the party is back on.
“Mama” reached number one on the Netherlands charts, while hitting the top 10 in several other countries, including Australia, Ireland, Germany, and more.
Jonas Blue’s breakout came with the success of 2016’s “Fast Car,” a tropical house remix of the Tracy Chapman classic. The remix became the year’s biggest selling single globally from a British debut artist. He went on to collaborate with artists including Sabrina Carpenter, Raye, Joe Jonas, Liam Payne, and more household pop names. After a string of successful singles, he released his debut album Blue in 2018.
