Chrisette Michele Drops ‘Epiphany (I’m Leaving)’ Remix After TikTok Resurgence
“Gen Z has spoken! Cheers to @loogifer @prodbyabnormal!!! You were dedicated, diligent, and professional! I’m so proud of you!”
First released in 2009 as the lead single from her second album Epiphany, Chrisette Michele’s “Epiphany (I’m Leaving)” is having a major moment on TikTok thanks to a recent dance trend, with some videos seeing upwards of a million likes.
Now, the R&B singer has released a new Jersey Club remix of the track with production by Loog & ProdByAbnormal ft. Ziahfyah. The remix stays true to the original song but punches up the beat to turn up the track’s danceability.
Following the release of the track, the singer shared a message on socials in her support of the remix.
“Gen Z has spoken! Cheers to @loogifer @prodbyabnormal!!! You were dedicated, diligent, and professional! I’m so proud of you!”
The viral dance trend features TikTokers turning their backs to the camera and twerking to the song’s chorus, as Michele sings, “So I think I’m just about over being your girlfriend / I’m leaving, I’m leaving / No I wonder what you’ve been doing / Where you been sleeping.” The track detailed Michele’s experiences in different relationships in her life, sharing lessons learned along the way.
The song gave Michele her first entry solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart when it was released in January 2009. The album Epiphany was released on May 5, 2009, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200, selling 83,000 copies in its opening week. The same year, she won a Grammy award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her song “Be Okay” featuring will.i.am off her first album, I Am. She has released six studio albums over the course of her career; I Am, Epiphany, Let Freedom Reign, Better, Milestone, and Out of Control. Better debuted at 12 on the Billboard Hot 200 and was nominated at the 2014 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album, which ultimately went to Alicia Keys for Girl on Fire.
Last month, Michele appeared for a surprise performance at the premiere of the Hulu documentary Trap Jazz, which follows a trio of musicians developing their own style of music. The R&B singer joined the trio for a trap jazz-rendition of the classic jazz tune “Summertime.”
