Crimes Of The Future, set in a not-so-distant future, depicts humans learning to adapt to their synthetic surroundings and as they alter their biological makeup, some naturally, some surgically, the body itself becomes art. Humans have lost the ability to feel physical pain, can operate on their own bodies for pleasure, and “surgery is the new sex”.

As a disease called Accelerated Evolution Syndrome causes abnormal organs to grow inside the body of celebrity performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) surgically removes them in front of a live audience. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, and a mysterious group wants to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.

David Cronenberg wrote the script of Crimes Of The Future over 20 years ago but set it aside until he decided that now was the right moment to make the film. He explained, “Various elements have risen to the top of public consciousness around the world – like the fact, for example, that microplastics are in every human being on earth right now, because of what has happened to the oceans. That made me realize the film is more relevant than ever.”

The soundtrack for Crimes Of The Future by Howard Shore has been digitally released.
