Alexander 23 Releases Defiant Breakup Song, ‘Crash’
Alexander 23 will be hitting the road with John Mayer this spring.
Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Alexander 23 is back with an instantly catchy track, “Crash.” A breakup song with jangly guitars and relatable lyrics, “Crash” is an unfiltered parting shot at an ex.
The song arrives hot on the heels of news that Alexander will be making his return to Lollapalooza this summer. Of the track Alexander shares, “‘Crash’” is about missing someone you were in a relationship with, but not missing who you both became within that relationship.”
Opening with arpeggiated guitar and whisper-sung vocals, “Crash” slowly blooms into a fiery pop-rock track. “I miss you, but I don’t miss us,” Alexander sings on the tart chorus. “Cause apart we’re great, but together we suck.” His newfound resolve is driven home by forceful drums, which underscore the defiance at the song’s core.
“Crash” is the latest taste of Alexander’s forthcoming full-length debut, which he has been working on with producer Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Carly Rae Jepsen, Conan Gray). “It’s as honest as I’ve ever been, both lyrically and sonically,” Alexander told Rolling Stone about the project. “I’ve poured everything I have into making this over the past year, and I hope people can find some answers they’ve been looking for in it.”
“Crash” follows the Rodrigo co-write “Hate Me If It Helps,” which arrived to wide acclaim in February. American Songwriter hailed the track, which Alexander produced alongside Nigro, saying it “seems to capture something about today’s Zeitgeist,” while Euphoria called it “the perfect breakup song.”
Alexander is gearing up for a whirlwind spring. In April, the Illinois native is up for his first Grammy Award for co-producing Olivia Rodrigo’s pop-punk smash “good 4 u.” And then, in May, he will rejoin John Mayer on rescheduled US dates for the singer and guitarist’s Sob Rock Tour 2022 before heading to the UK and Ireland for shows supporting pop upstart Tate McRae. Between his producer credits, electric live performances, and his growing body of solo work, Alexander 23 is destined to leave his mark on the pop world in 2022.
