Metallica Announce Photo Book ‘The Black Album In Black & White’
‘…You have to realize with Metallica, it’s always about the vibe,’ explains photographer Ross Halfin.
Metallica have announced a new book to mark the 30th anniversary of ‘The Black Album,’ titled The Black Album In Black & White.
The book will be published on October 19 via Reel Art Press. “This official collaboration with Metallica and photographer Ross Halfin is an epic celebration of one of the best-selling albums of all time, featuring classic and previously unpublished photographs,” an official description reads.
“It includes introductions by Ross Halfin, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo.”
Halfin photographed Metallica during their ‘Black Album’ sessions at One On One studios in North Hollywood, and subsequently shot thousands of film rolls during the band’s extensive tour that took place between 1991 and 1993.
According to NME, the photographer “documented the hectic performing schedule, backstage, rehearsals, interviews, band meetings and travel, alongside unique portrait shots of the band.”
Says Halfin, “We would always go to places and do pictures and we would stop wherever we felt somewhere had a vibe… you have to realize with Metallica, it’s always about the vibe.”
Lars Ulrich added: “By the time the songs and the recording were coming together, the confidence level was at an all-time high and we felt better than ever about who we were and how we viewed ourselves with regards to being photographed.”
The Black Album In Black & White is set to be sold at $49.95, and is available in hardback (224pp; 12.5 x 9.5 in). Limited copies of a deluxe signed edition will also be available.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of ‘The Black Album,’ Metallica released a covers compilation titled The Metallica Blacklist. The project’s 53 tracks find singer songwriters, country artists, electronic and hip hop artists sharing their love of these songs alongside punk rockers, indie darlings, icons of rock, metal, world music and many, many more… and for 50+ good causes: Profits will be divided evenly between charities of the artist’s choice and Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation.
