Hear Sam Smith And Burna Boy’s New Single ‘My Oasis’

Sam Smith and Burna Boy have teamed up for their first single together, ‘My Oasis.’ Available now via Capitol Records, the cross-continental collaboration between the British and Nigerian artists took place over the last few months, amid lockdown. The result, which premiered today on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show, is a soaring song of love lost and longed for.
In the impassioned track, Smith and Burna Boy’s distinctive, intertwining vocals tell an age-old tale: that of yearning for an unavailable partner. They sing, “You play with my emotions/I’m flowing like the ocean/I pray for your devotion/Cos there’s nothing I can do when it comes to you.”
In a statement, Smith said “‘My Oasis’ is a song that I wrote recently with Jimmy Napes and Burna Boy. This track has been a beautiful release of emotions for me during this time. I’m also made up to have a tune with Burna Boy who I’ve been a fan of for years now.”
“My Oasis,” which Smith teased on Twitter last night to eager fans, follows another well-received duet with Demi Lovato, “I’m Ready.” The joyful anthem, which featured the pair backed by a gospel choir, was released alongside an Olympics-themed video.
The singer-songwriter also thrilled fans earlier this month by releasing a live rendition of Coldplay’s “Fix You,” which they originally performed during an iHeart Living Room Session in May.
“I love this song, and as soon as I heard it I was just reminded again of how much of a classic it is,” they said about the song, off Coldplay’s 2005 LP, X&Y. “I’ve never actually seen Chris Martin perform this live, but I really want to, because I’ve fallen in love with this song after singing it.”
Looking ahead, the BRIT and Grammy-winning artist is among the nominees for the 65th annual Ivor Novello Awards, which recognizes creative excellence in songwriting and screen composition. Their duet with Normani, “Dancing With A Stranger,” is a contender for the PRS for Music Most Performed Work title.
The duo are up against Lewis Capaldi’s “Hold Me While You Wait” and Calvin Harris and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man’s “Giant.” While there will be no formal event this year in light of the coronavirus, winners will be announced on September 2 on Apple Music’s Beats 1 Radio.
