Andrew Lloyd Webber Shares Free Weekly Musicals
“The Shows Must Go On!” initiative will stream one of Webber’s legendary musical productions in its entirety every weekend.
Musical theatre icon Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced a new streaming initiative, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, called “The Shows Must Go On!”. Every Friday, Webber will share a production of one of his beloved musicals in its entirety, leaving it available to stream for the next 48 hours. The initiative will launch on “The Shows Must Go On!” YouTube channel this Friday, 3 April at 7:00 pm GMT with an adaptation of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat from 2000, starring Richard Attenborough, Joan Collins and Donny Osmond.
The following weekend, viewers can also look forward to catching the 2012 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring Mel C. of The Spice Girls, Tim Minchin and Chris Moyles. Additional programming announcements are forthcoming, but given Webber’s impressive catalogue of musicals, fans will have a lot to look forward to.
In his announcement on YouTube, Webber shared that the initiative is, “About musicals going from stage to screen.” Adding that, “Some time, buried in the schedule later on, the most important one, my disaster musical, By Jeeves, and I’m very, very fond of it and so will you”.
Since the mid-60s, Webber has composed some of the world’s most popular musicals, including, Cats, Evita and the longest-running show on Broadway, The Phantom Of The Opera. More recent productions have included 2015’s School Of Rock, based on the 2003 film, and 2013’s Stephen Ward, while Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella will premiere in London’s West End in October.
In addition to streaming full-length productions throughout the next few weeks, “The Shows Must Go On!” YouTube channel also offers backstage access, videos of favourite show tunes and much more from Broadway, The West End and beyond. While all programming will be free, viewers are encouraged to make donations to such arts causes as the UK’s Acting For Others, the US-based Broadway Cares and Australia’s Actors Benevolent Fund.
