One of the most influential artists in modern music, seven-time Grammy Award-winner Prince was a prolific songwriter and charismatic performer, whose catalogue includes some of the biggest hits of the ‘80s and ‘90s. With his irresistible blend of pop, R&B, soul, funk and even new wave, Prince pioneered the synth-heavy “Minneapolis sound” of the late 70s and 80s, with songs like 1979’s ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover’, 1981’s ‘Controversy’, 1982’s ‘1999’ and 1983’s ‘Little Red Corvette’.
Prince rose to worldwide superstardom with his 1984 film and soundtrack, Purple Rain, which spent 24 weeks atop the Billboard 200, and spawned hit singles like ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’ as well as the title track. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010 and added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry two years later.
Throughout the rest of the 80s and 90s, Prince would continue to reign with hits like ‘Kiss’ (1986), ‘Diamonds And Pearls’ (1991) and ‘The Most Beautiful Girl In The World’ (1994).
One of the most successful artists of all time, Prince sold over 150 million records worldwide, globally scoring 15 No.1 hits and 8 No.1 records throughout his 40-year career. In his lifetime, the singer-songwriter released 37 studio albums.
Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute To Prince will also feature performances by longtime Prince collaborator Sheila E, Gary Clark Jr, H.E.R., Miguel, Morris Day And The Time, the Revolution (Prince’s backing band), Usher and host Maya Rudolph, who also fronts the Prince tribute band, Princess, with singer-songwriter Gretchen Lieberum. Special appearances will be made by Fred Armisen, Naomi Campbell, Misty Copeland, FKA Twigs and legendary producer, Jimmy Jam.
