In a surprising twist of cross-cultural collaboration, BLACKPINK member and K-pop star Rosé has released a cover of Nat King Cole’s holiday classic ‘The Christmas Song’.
The 22-year-old singer shared in an Instagram post on Wednesday (18 December) that ‘The Christmas Song’ is her favourite holiday song.
“Here’s a little Christmas gift I prepared for you guys. I did a short cover of my favourite Christmas carol, The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole. I hope you like my small gift and that you all have a safe and sound Christmas,” she wrote. “I love you all from the bottom of my heart. Merry Christmas.”
While Rosé, real name Roseanne Park (Korean: 박채영; Park Chae-young), got her big break in South Korea, she was actually born in Auckland, New Zealand before relocating to Melbourne, Australia.
Originally written in 1945 by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé, ‘The Christmas Song’ is one of Nat King Cole’s definitive recordings, after he performed it in 1961.
Each holiday season the perennial classic makes its return to the charts, landing at No.39 on Billboard’s Hot 100 last year and is back on the chart at No.32 in 2019.
The song has been covered countless times in the ensuing decades, including most recently by Gregory Porter, who initially recorded the cover for his 2017 tribute album, Nat King Cole & Me, released through Blue Note and Decca Records.
Rosé offers a faithful rendition of the song, emulating King’s lush vocals. Her surprise covers caps off a remarkable year for the K-pop group that consists of additional members Jennie, Jisoo and Lisa
BLACKPINK became the first-ever K-pop group to hit the 1 billion mark on Youtube for their ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’ video while their recent single ‘Kill This Love’ became the highest-charting Hot 100 hit ever by a K-pop girl group. The song debuted at No.41, breaking the record previously held by ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’, which debuted and peaked at No.55 in June 2018.

Not even close to being as good as Nat King Cole. His rich voice is unbeatable.Rose has a nice voice but it pales next to NKC…..Merry Christmas to all
