Listen To ‘Toluca Stars’, The Latest From Underworld’s ‘Drift’ Project
“We started writing ‘Toluca Stars’ in Mexico, in a hotel on the outskirts of the City of Toluca”, says Underworld’s Karl Hyde.
Underworld have released ‘Toluca Stars’, the fifth and latest episode of their on-going cross-platform project, Drift. You can check the track out below.
Described as “Like the first wisps of daylight breaking the horizon, the 10-minute ‘Toluca Stars’ is vast and wide-open, a place where a beautifully minimal vocal floats on a gentle, persuasive pulse before giving way to a poetry that speaks of odd days ahead.”
“We started writing ‘Toluca Stars’ in Mexico, in a hotel on the outskirts of the City of Toluca”, says Underworld’s Karl Hyde. “It struck us as being odd and a bit stark, but everyone working in the place had this upbeat energy and we ended up writing some of our favourite tracks there. Looking back we always say we wish we’d had someone filming us, to show you the scenes on the streets outside, things I’ve never seen in my life – surreal and at the same time heart-breaking.”
First launched in November 2018, Drift is an ongoing experiment that regularly publishes new Underworld material – music, film, stories and more – directly through the electronic pop pioneers’ official website. The Drift series is described as “an epic year-long road trip by the band in collaboration with [long-time acolyte] Tomato and friends old and new from playwrights to DJs in jazz and techno to painters and poets.”
Elsewhere in Underworld news, the band have also confirmed they will be a part of Manchester’s Warehouse Project: a three month season commencing on 20 September and running until 1 January, showcasing the widest spectrum of sound & production with shows from Aphex Twin, Underworld, Four Tet, Nina Kraviz, Bicep, Fatboy Slim, Hacienda Classical, Above & Beyond, Paradise, Drumcode and many more.
Underworld will be headlining Warehouse Project on Thursday, 5 December. The event will take place at the project’s newly minted, 10,000 capacity basecamp, The Depot at Mayfield.
