Rammstein Become First German-Speaking Band To Achieve A UK Top 10 Album
The band’s self-titled seventh album has debuted at No.3 on the British official album charts.
Rammstein’s long awaited, self-titled seventh studio album has landed at Number 3 on the official UK album charts, making them the first German-speaking band to ever achieve an official UK Top 10 album.
Rammstein is the second studio album to be released in the UK via Spinefarm Records following Liebe Ist Für Alle Da, 10 years ago. Prior to Rammstein, Spinefarm have previously released the compilation album, Made in Germany 1995–2011 [2011]; two documentaries – In Amerika [2015] & Rammstein: Paris [2017]; plus, the Rammstein: Paris live album from 2017.
Meanwhile, in Germany, the band are enjoying further Top 10 success. Rammstein has sold in excess of 265,000 records, the best first week sales for any rock album this century in the country. The new 11-track studio offering is the 10th No.1 record for the band in Germany and – at the time of writing – 8 Rammstein albums currently sit in the German Top 100 charts.
The new album was produced by Olsen Involtini with Rammstein and the band recently spoke about the making of the record with Metal Hammer Germany’s Thorsten Zahn.
“We just wanted to try something new – how we write, basically”, said guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe. “And even the way we produce – first we went to France with Tom Dalgety (Ghost, Royal Blood) and Olsen Involtini (Rammstein’s front of house engineer) instead of (long-term collaborators) Jacob Hellner and Stefan Glaumann as previously.
“Change is always a fragile thing: On the one hand, you don’t want to change something you’ve had success with. But on the other hand, you’ve got that desire to develop as a musician. We decided to step out of our comfort zone.
“It wasn’t always plain sailing, at the start we didn’t really get along that well with Tom and Olsen. And Jacob Hellner was also a father figure to a certain extent, someone who really leads a production. Olsen doesn’t do that, Tom doesn’t do that. So for me it just felt like: Nobody knows where we’re supposed to go any more. This is when you realise: from an astrological point of view, Rammstein is fire, water and earth at the same time. What we’re missing is air, in other word, is lightness. We tried to bring in air. Olsen Involtini is an air sign.”
Rammstein will debut material from their new record on their upcoming sold-out stadium tour of Europe, beginning on 27 May and running through to 23 August. They play a much-anticipated UK date at Milton Keynes’ Stadium MK on 6 July.
