‘Brothers In Arms’ Back In UK Top Ten
Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms, one of the bestselling albums of all time with worldwide sales estimated at some 30 million copies, is back in the UK top ten.
The 1985 Grammy-winner, which topped the UK chart for ten weeks and the US survey for nine on initial release, smashed back into the Official Charts Company album listings today (Sunday) at No. 8. The new chart position follows the record being made available at a low-budget price in the UK at some leading digital retailers.
Brothers In Arms has sales in the UK alone of well over 4.1 million copies, placing it comfortably inside the all-time top ten among individual artist albums. Queen’s ‘Greatest Hits’ continues to lead that chart. The Dire Straits classic is certified 13-times platinum in Britain, nine times in the US, and topped the bestsellers in more than 25 countries worldwide.
The album’s spectacular success on its first release helped the band to win Best British Group for the second time at the fifth annual BRIT Awards, in the February after its release. It then won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal for one of its signature songs, ‘Money For Nothing,’ while the LP itself took the Best Engineered Recording (Non-Classical) title.

You will love him live. I see him every time he comes to town. Truly satisfying.
However, if you don’t know, bone up on the solo catalog. He does very little DS material. Romeo and Juliet, Brothers in Arms, So Far Away, maybe Telegraph Road. All great tunes, but definitely expect mostly solo material, which is also outstanding.

Una de las bandas que significó la reafirmación de estilos aparentemente devastados por el monumentalismo de rock sinfónico fue Dire Straits. Desde sus inicios en Londres en junio de 1977 con Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illey además de Pick Withers ha sido esta agrupación la que dignificó una corriente musical que se inspiraría en ritmos tradicionales y los trasladaría al contexto moderno. El folk, el country, rockabilly hasta el rock contemporáneo y que han sido divulgadas en especiales composiciones sobre todo las del guitarrista virtuoso, Mark Knopfler.
Si algo podemos destacar de esta agrupación es que la misma ha emprendido la divulgación de los estilos tradicionales que nutrieron al rock, desde los inicios –entiéndase el folk el country, el blue y otros- Dire Straits renovó al rock contemporáneo, no con tecnología y efectos espectaculares, sino reactualizando sus orígenes, no tan frenéticos sino evocando aquellas melodías que ubican dicha música en su pasado rural.
Hasta la manera de tocar del solista y líder Mark Knopfler, sin “uña” o “pestaña” llamada técnicamente “estilo hands-guitars” nos induce a sostener que Knopfler alude a una modalidad de ejecutar que da importancia al timbre acústico de los instrumentos, en especial a la guitarra. Su fraseo delicado, que preserva, no para algunas ocasiones, el vibrato, llega a evocar el sonido de la viola y el registro grave del violín, con efectos que no son nada fortuitos, donde el sonido se entrecruza entre los intersticios, que nos expresa su talento y virtuosismo, solo de un genio, con herencias musicales de arte y estilos de músicas de otros tiempos, mas declamativas.
Hoy, Dire Straits, es la clave a la hora de hacer un balance de varias décadas pasadas. Además de la renovación del rock o la contribución a su afianzamiento como género moderno de origen popular tradicional –como también lo hizo Bob Dylan, emulando Guthrie- solo que Dire Straits ha contribuido a la divulgación de este género de la música popular contemporánea en los lugares donde poco había llegado el rock como Australia, Nueva Zelanda una gran receptividad y el reflejo de ello por la aceptación de sus satiras, humor negro e ironía, además de las ventas que lo llevaron a obtener discos de oro -30 millones de copias- y otros aspectos que lo expresan sus letras, de una agrupación fundamental que sin duda hizo historia.

This is by far their best work… IMO this is a perfect album… I have 3 prefect albums…. Dire Straits Brothers in Arms, The Police Ghost in The Machine and Devo New Traditionalists…..
It sounds great ion vinyl and SACD…..
