Pre-Order Signed Debut Album By Rising Star Benjamin Clementine
‘At Least For Now,’ the debut album by widely-admired north London newcomer Benjamin Clementine, will be released by Virgin EMI on March 23. Compared by the Sunday Times to Nina Simone, Antony Hegarty and Laura Mvula, Clementine’s emergence has seen him go from busking in Paris to supporting Cat Power and Tune-Yards, then a standout debut on BBC2’s ‘Later…With Jools Holland,’ where Paul McCartney praised his “amazing” performance.
The 25-year-old followed that with sellout headliners at the Purcell Rooms, Koko and Emmanuel Centre in London, and will play a new headline date in the capital at the Barbican on April 1. You can now pre-order his debut album from the uDiscover Deluxe Audio Store here.
Clementine had a strict religious upbringing in Edmonton, North London, in which gospel was the only music through which he was allowed to express himself. He taught himself the piano and discovered classical music, inspired in particular by the work of Erik Satie, Antony and the Johnsons, Leonard Cohen and humorist Jake Thackray.
At 20, he absconded to the streets of Paris, where his striking and intense voice stood out in his own versions of songs by Jacques Brel and Leo Ferre. Busking in stations and on trains, Benjamin honed his skill in the art of public performance, and caught the attention of French independent label Behind, with whom he signed a recording contract.
‘At Least For Now’ is the expression of all of those experiences. As The Observer wrote: “Very little about Clementine is predictable, all of it is worth watching.”
