Picture Disc Vinyl Edition Of The Original ‘Dumbo’ Film Soundtrack Out Now

A new picture disc vinyl edition of the original film soundtrack for Walt Disney’s legendary Dumbo is out now.
Disney’s legendary animated film, based upon the novel of the same name by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, first appeared in 1941. The plot centres on circus owner Max Medici, who enlists Holt Farrier to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughing stock in an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur VA Vandevere and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.
The new picture disc edition of the original film soundtrack is now available and its release coincides with director Tim Burton’s new version of Dumbo – starring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green and Alan Arkin – which will be showing in cinemas from today.
The Dumbo picture disc includes the original version of the Dumbo’s classic song ‘Baby Mine’. Composed by Frank Churchill, with lyrics by Ned Washington and Betty Noyes, ‘Baby Mine’ soundtracks the scene which baby Dumbo visits his mother and is reduced to tears when he sees her locked in a cage. The song was nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar, and since then Allison Strauss, Bette Midler and Bonnie Raitt have covered it.
Recently adding his name to that list is Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, who has covered ‘Baby Mine’ for the new live-action version of Dumbo.
Discussing his own family connection to the son, Butler revealed, “There is a scene with a locomotive in the original Dumbo that uses an instrument called the Sonovox that my grandpa Alvino Rey made famous in the 30s. Every time I saw the film I thought it was him.”
He added: “When we were asked to do [‘Baby Mine’], I immediately got all of my grandfather’s old guitars and wanted to play them in the song. My mum plays the harp on the track, my brother the Theremin, my wife [Chassagne] sings and plays drums, and our son even plays the triangle, as well as the rest of our ‘family’ in Arcade Fire.
“I will forever relate to the song thinking about the people I hold so dear that are so precious to me. Listen for the cameo of my grandpa Alvino’s famous Sonovox at the end.”
