Gladys Knight To Sing National Anthem At Super Bowl LIII
“I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta”.
Get ready for Super Soul Sunday, with news of the former Motown star and R&B legend Gladys Knight will be performing the National Anthem at this year’s Superbowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz stadium in Atlanta.
“I am proud to use my voice to unite and represent our country in my hometown of Atlanta,” Knight said in a statement. “The NFL recently announced their new social justice platform Inspire Change, and I am honoured to be a part of its inaugural year.”
The Grammy-winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will perform during the pre-game festivities that will be televised live on CBS before the game’s kick-off on 3 February.
Knight rose to fame with her group Gladys Knight and the Pips who found success on Motown with the No. 1 hits ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’, ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ and ‘Friendship Train’ at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Since signing with Motown in 1966, the group were later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Knight joins the ranks of other illustrious singers who have sung the National Anthem at the Super Bowl including the late Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, as well as pop stars Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, and fellow Motown legend Diana Ross.
The Empress of Soul is currently on tour and is also scheduled to appear on the bill for the UK’s three-day jazz festival, the Love Supreme Festival the weekend of 5 to 7 July 2019.
The NFL also recently shared the performers for this year’s half-time show, the most watched musical event of the year, with Maroon 5 headlining and special guests Travis Scott and Big Boi from Outkast.
Big Boi is not the only homegrown talent performing, Knight is also a native of Atlanta and shared her excitement for the hometown show writing, “Atlanta, I’m coming home!”
