Tori Kelly Covers Drake’s “Time Flies,” Announces EP Release Date For ‘Solitude’
The two-time Grammy Award winner recorded the EP at home, written about finding joy in quarantine.
Tori Kelly, who picked up two Grammys in 2019 for her album Hiding Place, announced she’ll be releasing her EP Solitude on August 14. The announcement was coupled with a cover of Drake’s “Time Flies,” this time given a soulful, acoustic remix.
Solitude was primarily written in isolation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and was recorded entirely within her home studio. Kelly produced the EP remotely with help from producers Monro, Spencer Stewart, Stint, and Jorgen Odegard (Imagine Dragons, P!nk, Adam Lambert).
“I’ve never been more thankful for my home studio than I have during this season of being quarantined,” says Kelly in a press release.
“In some ways, it felt like I was going back to my roots, when I would be in my room, making songs and posting covers on YouTube. A lot of change has happened since my last album, so it felt great to just freely write what was on my heart and be inspired by different stories. I had so much fun creating this EP and I’m excited to share this new chapter of my music.”
The EP marks a more joyful outlook for the singer, despite the conditions it was written under. Being quarantined with her husband, German basketball player Andre Murillo, has put Kelly in a happier headspace than was reflected her previous album, which dealt with her grandfather’s passing and her parents’ separation.
“A lot of change has happened since my last album, so it felt great to just freely write what was on my heart and be inspired by different stories,” Kelly says in a statement on her website. “I had so much fun creating this EP, and I’m excited to share this new chapter of my music.”
The singer-songwriter is known for her frequent appearances on television, on shows like Star Search, American Idol, and The Voice, and first gathered a large following through posting YouTube videos of her performing. At the 2016 Grammys, she was nominated for Best New Artist, and in 2019 received Best Gospel Album for Hiding Place and Best Gospel Performance/Song for “Never Alone (w/ Kirk Franklin),” the single from that same album.
While in quarantine, Kelly also has launched an Instagram Live series titled, “QuaranTEA with Tori,” featuring guests like Demi Lovato, JoJo, and Alessia Cara.
