Watch Lady Gaga And BLACKPINK’s 3-D ‘Sour Candy’ Lyric Video
The record-breaking single comes off Lady Gaga’s chart-topping album, ‘Chromatica’.
Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK premiered the lyric video for their collaborative single, ‘Sour Candy’. Channelling a VR game, the creative visual opens in a brightly-coloured, 3-D digital landscape, and follows a variety of fantastical flying creatures. ‘Sour Candy’ marks the third single off Gaga’s sixth studio album, Chromatica, which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
Dropping just one day ahead of Chromatica as a single, ‘Sour Candy’ broke records on both Spotify and YouTube. On 28 May – its first day of release – the single landed at No. 6 on the global Spotify chart with over 3.67 million streams, giving BLACKPINK the biggest debut for a song by a girl group in Spotify history. On the same day, the song also reached No.1 in 52 countries on iTunes, marking another record for the K-pop group. On YouTube, the audio-only video for ‘Sour Candy’ garnered 21.8 million views in its first 24 hours, breaking the record for the biggest debut for an all-female collaboration on the video platform.
The eye-catching visuals for ‘Sour Candy’ were led by 3-D animator, VR performer and graphic designer Sam Rolfes at Team Rolfes. Sharing the video premiere on Twitter this morning, Rolfes called the project, “One of the most lovely, creatively supportive productions I’ve been part of”.
Additionally today, Lady Gaga dropped a selection of limited-edition ‘Sour Candy’ merch on her online store. These include t-shirts, shorts, a choker necklace and a COVID-19-friendly cloth face mask.
Released 29 May via Interscope Records, Chromatica marked Lady Gaga’s sixth No.1 album on the Billboard 200. With 274,000 equivalent album units sold in the US during its first week, Chromatica broke the 2020 record for the most album sales in one week by a female artist.
‘Sour Candy’ follows singles ‘Stupid Love’ and ‘Rain on Me’ featuring Ariana Grande. The former debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March, while the latter opened at No. 1 on the 6 June chart.
