Say Hello To Sey
The latest hot new name out of Sweden, Seinabo Sey, has announced the UK release of her debut single and first London headline show.
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter has the single ‘Hard Time’ out on July 23, the day after she plays at the Notting Hill Arts Club. The track has already reached No. 1 on Hype Machine on two separate occasions. Seinabo has also topped Hype Machine and Shazam in Sweden with her first release there, ‘Younger,’ winning many plaudits for its video, directed by Gustav Johansson.
Seinabo grew up in both Sweden and Gambia, the birthplace of her late father Mawdo Sey, a well-known musician across West Africa. “I’ve had to live between two different cultures where you don’t really feel you belong anywhere,” she says, “and you have to understand people first to make them understand you.”
She met her songwriting partner, producer Magnus Lidehäll, on Facebook in early 2011, and they’ve become a powerhouse pairing, built around her stirring vocals and his low-key, hook-filled synths and beats. The pair have been recording intensely in Stockholm for Seinabo’s debut album, out later this year.
In addition to the Notting Hill headliner, Sey will also play at the Latitude Festival on July 20, and at festivals in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany in August.
