Teenage Island Records Prospect Lola Young Impacts With ‘Intro’
The release of ‘Intro’ was marked by the 18-year-old’s three consecutive shows at the London club Scotch of St. James.
Emerging Island Records artist Lola Young’s debut body of work, the seven-track release Intro, is out now. It comes in the wake of her debut single ‘6 Feet Under,’ which was widely applauded by a range of respected UK publications including The Guardian, The Sunday Times and British GQ. It also had radio support from such tastemakers as Annie Mac and Gilles Peterson and digital recognition from Spotify and Apple Music.
Intro was marked by the 18-year-old’s three consecutive nights starting on release day, 19 November, at the London club Scotch of St. James. Earlier, she played an intimate residency at the east London venue Kansas Smitty’s, with four shows over three nights.
‘6 Feet Under’ is co-produced by Al Shux (whose credits include Kendrick Lemar, Lana Del Rey and Jay Z) and Lex1k. The lead single ’Blind Love’ has co-production by Two Inch Punch (Sam Smith, Rex Orange County) and Manuka, the newcomers who also produce ‘Grey and Lilac,’ the opening track.
The Guardian wrote that ‘Blind Love’ “is all about being ‘young, in love and dumb’ and perfectly encapsulates the teenage emotion of ‘if he doesn’t love me back, I may as well be dead.’” Clash Music said of ‘6 Feet Under’: “It’s beautifully pieced together, with the Al Shux co-produced number originating from sparse piano-driven sessions. Evolving into something more nuanced and atmospheric, it features some of Lola Young’s most striking, revealing lyrics yet.”
“Intro is my first body of work,” says Young. “It reflects where I am today, it reflects my London, my circle, my eclectic taste in everything around me, and gives me a place to raise my deepest thoughts, demons and my largest joy which has always and will always be music.”
