John Coltrane ‘Live at Birdland’ Verve Acoustic Sounds Series
The 1964 album features Coltrane’s classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones.
John Coltrane’s Live At Birdland is the latest classic jazz staple to receive a vinyl reissue as part of Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series.
Live At Birdland captured Coltrane amid a period of rapid artistic development that would continue throughout the final years of his career. Originally released in 1964, it combines three live performances with two studio recordings. The live selections were captured at New York City’s famed Birdland jazz club on October 8, 1963, while the remaining tracks were recorded the following month at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
Throughout the record, Coltrane is accompanied by his classic quartet of pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. The same lineup would go on to record Coltrane’s landmark A Love Supreme the following year.
Among the album’s highlights is “Alabama,” an original composition written by Coltrane in response to the September 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The attack killed four young girls and became a pivotal event in the Civil Rights Movement. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in November 1963, Coltrane’s solemn piece offered a musical response to the tragedy.
The LP also includes a live interpretation of Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue,” featuring Coltrane on soprano saxophone. Other selections include “The Promise,” “Your Lady,” and “I Want To Talk About You.”
The new edition is mastered from the original analog tapes by Matthew Lutthans, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP), and packaged in a high-quality tip-on gatefold jacket.
Live At Birdland follows several other Coltrane titles in Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series, including Africa/Brass and Impressions, the latter of which arrived earlier this year. The reissue also forms part of “Coltrane 100,” a massive, year-long global celebration leading up to the 100th anniversary of the saxophonist’s birth on September 23. The campaign has included catalog releases, rare recordings, live events, and other projects honoring Coltrane’s legacy.
