Loretta Lynn’s Lifetime In Country Music
Loretta Lynn, one of the true living legends of country music, will be among the artists to receive lifetime achievement awards at the Americana Music Association Honors and Awards ceremony in Nashville in September 2014. She will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting, in honour of a songbook including such greats as ‘Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind),’ ‘Fist City,’ ‘The Pill’ and the composition that lent its title to the film about her life starring Sissy Spacek, ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter.’
Lynn is widely respected as one of the founders of modern-day country. In between her first appearance in 1960 with ‘I’m A Honky Tonk Girl’ and 1988, she placed 76 singles on the country chart, including 16 No. 1s. Her most recent showing on the survey came on a version of ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ with Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert, from a tribute album to her of that name.
Loretta was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988, and among countless CMA Awards, she was voted Female Vocalist of the Year in 1967, 1972 and 1973. She won a whole new audience with the help of producer and avowed fan Jack White on the 2004 album ‘Van Lear Rose,’ which went to No. 2 on the country chart. She continues to tour, with dates listed on her website through to October.
Also due to be honoured at the Americanas in September are the great singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, who’ll receive the “Spirit of Americana” Free Speech Award; Flaco Jiménez, the Conjunto accordionist from San Antonio, Texas, in the instrumental category; and Grammy-winning New York blues veteran Taj Mahal in the performance category.

Loretta, I have been a fan for all of your career. Loved the movie and every time I hear”Coal miners Daughter”, I get choked up. You have been a legend not only to country women but to young women everywhere. Thank you for your music and the influence you’ve had and continue to have on all of us-your loving fans.

All of my childhood I grew up listening to Loretta and Conway twit ty blasting at 6am. Now I listen to them on pandora in my car every time I drive I love them both.
