It’s OK To Like Jazz
We all know someone who says something like, “I’m not into jazz” or “I just don’t get what jazz is all about.” So we’ve put together a 100 track playlist of music that should convince even the most sceptical that ‘It’s OK To Like Jazz.’ And if you already like jazz, we think that you’ll love our tunes.

And there are countless more. Jazz has been my preferred musical genre for over seventy years, covering all phases from traditional to modern. It still provides me with great enjoyment. My advice would be: listen ciosely & with an open mind.

I feel like a piker @ approx. fifty years plus of listening. One of my favorites- Dexter Gordon’s rendition of “Blue Monk” has been omitted, but nothing is perfect.
I’d also add Return To Forever’s “La Fiesta”, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong: Summertime; Billie Holiday: Good Morning Heartache; John Coltrane: Moment’s Notice; Horace Silver::Song For My Father; Wayne Shorter :Nefertitti; Clark Terry’s Big B-A-D Band: Una Mas; Woody Shaw: Rosewood; Joe Turner& The Trumpet Kings: T.V.Mama. The list could be endless.:

My Favourite Things by Coltrane will put most people off jazz . Normally if you don’t say it’s jazz people will listen. It’s not the music they’re afraid of it’s the word JAZZ that scares the shit out of them.

In the coming crash, it will likely become obvious that a major portion of the blame goes to the vicious circle of power-crazed politicians using other people’s money to buy votes via individual handouts. If so, then perhaps this principle can gain approval:Anybody receiving direct payments from feds is ineligible to vote for federal offices. While that takes away my vote, I think it’s worthwhile.

Good cast. Good for Jennifer Klein. She’s one of the most underrated and hardworking producers in town. I know because I was at an agency a few years back and dealt with her on several projects. It’ll be interesting to see Turner direct. Most big name writers who do this have trouble transitioning from the lone wolf aspect of writing to the team-player mindset required to direct. But he’s certainly no wallflower and has a strong personality.I’m staying tuned…

To the original author of this list, well done. You have provided a list of music to try and help those who don’t understand the genre. Nicely presented introduction to why jazz, once it is understood, is an enjoyable genre to have within your collection of music.
To Len Jones, grow the hell up, stop trying to be a total ass hat and show everyone how much you honestly don’t know, and instead come up with a better list and join in the group of people trying to explain the genre to the general public. Or are you honestly that brain dead that you can’t see what is trying to be done here, that instead if being a total ass hat, there are people out there who are trying to say to those who do not understand the genre that once they understand what makes up the genre, they might actually like it too.
And before you try unpinning your petticoats and getting all macho in your uneducated reply, i have had two bands whose somewhat eclectic song list would show that they also showed that some jazz is worth listening to. Oh, and also remember that i have both emphysema and Leukaemia and have about 12 – 18 months to live, so I really don’t give a rats A** what your negative comments mean or meant.
They played to try and introduce jazz to the audiences who attended to a form of music that they should be able to feel comfortable with, because they understand it. Fortunately they now all include jazz in their own music collections.
Go out and compose your own helpful list to assist people to understand this rich musical genre and publish that instead if wasting everyone’s time with your negative drivel…..

Wow, Mac – that’s lousy news about your illness, here’s hoping predictions of your imminent demise prove mistaken. I don’t think Len Jones’ comment [on the thread that I see] marks him as a ‘brain dead’ ‘ass hat’ at all [as I understand those slurs]. Hard to believe you’d want to be delivering a vitriolic rant of the type you’re deploring … but you so did that.
My comment on the facebook page was to be:
Great concept, no doubt many are uninitiated (some would call those ‘rubes’), and there’s a place in the world for them, “OK to Like” sends a tepid, lily-livered cum-bay-yahyah message that is at odds with jazz’ true spirit. But that’s a sweet setlist.

Apparently some would call me a hip-trendy – whatever – jazz people [jazz cats, for the boppers out there] are pretty opinionated in my experience. That’s a good thing.

Mac, you post a vitriolic rant against Len Jones which decries the practice of posting vitriolic rants. Regrets about your illness, hope predictions of your imminent demise prove unfounded. In any case, it’s no excuse to “go postal” againt people whose views differ from yours.
Jazz people [jazz cats, if you’re older] are often passionate contrarians. Your hyper-sensitive, truculent response to Len J, replete with ad hominem attacks, arguably marks you as a dilettante, which is counter-indicated, of course, by your self-recounted experience.
As to the page, I said:
Great concept, no doubt many are uninitiated (some would call those ‘rubes’), and there’s a place in the world for them, “OK to Like” sends a tepid, lily-livered cum-bay-yahyah message that is at odds with jazz’ true spirit. But that’s a sweet setlist.

I have loved jazz since first hearing The Voice Of America – Jazz Hour, some 60 years ago with Willis Canover on shortwave radio, Favourites – Ellington, Miles, Monk, Mulligan, Rollins, and many many more musicians have given me such joy and pleasure over the years, and yes I love Blues Folk,, Rock, Classical. If it is good music and gets to your spirit and soul, that’s it !!
You’ve got it or you haven’t.

Well, if need Chris Botti, will need Kenny G too. Jesus. As a form of expression, it would be wrong to put jazz in a very restricted way. But it’s also need some criticism, form and content, or will lose it’s reason and context. Jazz cannot cut roots with the beauty of it’s pioneers. Use commercial modern music and mix with jazz may be a option to introduce jazz for beginners, but let’s use good sense. I’m not looking to stuck jazz and doesnt it be adapted to the differents periods of time, but i think i’ve already made my point.

If I was an outsider to jazz, this playlist would make me dislike it all the more. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but immersions into jazz (especially for the non-musician) need to blur the lines of music they already like, or is generally commercial.

This is a good playlist, but it has a certain slant toward, I would say “easy” listening and pop. Which is fine, for a jazz novice who is coming from that direction. But whenever I make a playlist of jazz for someone who doesn’t like or doesn’t know jazz, I try to think of what direction they’re coming from. People into punk or metal or noise might be more interested in freer and more chaotic sounds. People who come from hip-hop might be more interested in grooves and famous samples. People who like drum-heavy classic rock might like stuff that heavily features hard-hitting drummers like Art Blakey or Elvin Jones or Tony Williams. I got into jazz as a teenager and this list would have been totally the wrong thing to entice me. It was records like Monk/Jazz Messengers, Coltrane’s Sound, Shape of Jazz to Come, The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, Milestones that I liked best. Hard bop had a big appeal to me as did early avant garde stuff. I would have fallen asleep if someone played me Chet Baker at that age, let alone David Benoit. I would have gotten totally the wrong impression of what jazz is and can be.
